Have mercy and wash away my sin

according to your abundant mercy

2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,

    and cleanse me from my sin!

The heading of Psalm 51 provides the historical situation of this lament Psalm. This was after David had been confronted by Nathan for adultery and murder. In his conviction of sin, he cried out in repentance. Today, our sin and situation may be different. But this Psalm reminds us of the mercy and forgiveness of God.
